Partner dance classes for beginners: a couple in a close embrace, connecting as they dance

What Partner Dance Classes Teach Beginners: It’s a Conversation, Not a Monologue

Partner dance is a conversation, not a monologue. When you join a partner dance class, you think you’re there to learn steps. But steps are only the grammar. You need them, like you need a language to talk to somebody, and the bigger part is learning to connect with the person in front of you. Without that, you each do your part and the step happens, which is only getting things done. Tango is fully improvised, one moment after another, and from any moment anything can come next. In the first classes you learn to walk together, to stand, and to hold each other. Once you can connect, learning the steps is easy.
