FAQs

Our Community Standards

Tango is a dance of deep connection and mutual respect that requires being in very close proximity with one another. Because of this unique intimacy, it is imperative for us to keep our class atmosphere clean and comfortable for everyone. We maintain high standards for the kind of people who join us to ensure that every student meets our requirements for conduct and respectful communication.

These FAQs serve as a safeguard for our community. We are very intentional about who we welcome into the Academy because we believe the quality of the dance floor starts with the character of the people on it. We could, like other schools, allow unrestricted registration and fill classes with excess numbers, which would be in our favour. Instead, we choose to protect the experience and balance of every participant. By setting these boundaries, we protect the safe, elegant, and respectful environment that our students value.

⚠️ Response Protocol

If you are offered a spot, register promptly. Missing the response window will result in immediate removal from the waitlist, and your place will be passed on to the next person without exception.

🚫 Good Faith Clause

Blocking a spot without genuine intent may result in blacklisting from future registrations. This applies especially to those who repeatedly ask for a place, only to disappear when a spot is offered.

❌ Behaviours That Necessitated This Policy

  • Entitlement: Asking questions such as “Do you guarantee me a [gender] partner?” or “Is the class free?” when the fee is clearly stated.
  • Impatience: Complaining with lines like “I added my name months ago, why haven’t I gotten a spot yet?
  • Disengagement: Repeatedly requesting admission, then failing to register or to even acknowledge communication when a place is offered.
  • Disrespect: Being rude to assistants who are present to facilitate the process and maintain a healthy class ratio.

About Tango & The Academy

Tango is a dance of connection and improvisation, where partners move in harmony to create a unique story with every embrace.

Originating in Buenos Aires, it blends cultural influences with deep emotional expression. With no fixed patterns, it is a conversation of movement, guided by music and mutual understanding, a true dance of the heart.

All courses and sessions are conducted by Roopa, who brings over 20 years of experience since 2006 to the floor.

She has trained extensively under traditional grandmasters in Argentina and focuses on delivering authentic training here in India.

We are a dedicated Argentine Tango Academy, and Tango is our main focus.

We also offer beginner batches and workshops in Latin dance styles Dominican Bachata, along with occasional workshops in Merengue, Jive, and Salsa.

These are designed to introduce foundational movement and musicality, not as substitutes for Tango, but as complementary explorations.

Not at all. In fact, it deepens your understanding.

Partner dancing relies on a shared foundational base, which applies across all styles.

These forms do not compete. They complement each other. A technique that feels elusive in one style often clicks when approached through another. There is significant overlap in movement vocabulary, with rich cross-pollination across genres.

Each style interprets movement differently depending on rhythm and musicality, but together they build body awareness, alignment, and musical sensitivity. This integrated approach makes beats and rhythms more intuitive and accessible.

Our teacher’s teaching method simplifies recurring steps across styles, ensuring fast, effective learning.

If you prefer to begin with one form, we recommend starting with Tango. It offers unmatched clarity, structure, and grounding that benefits all other styles.

Here’s a brief overview of what you offer:

  • In-Studio Classes: Learn tango in a traditional classroom setting.
  • Online Classes: Convenient learning from home.
  • Private 1-on-1 Lessons: Personalized instruction for focused learning for intermediate and advanced dancers.
  • Milongas & Practicas: Social dance events and guided practice sessions.
  • Corporate Classes: Engage employees and promote team-building.
  • Choreography: Custom routines for performances and events.
  • Wedding Dance Lessons: Make your first dance a magical moment via personalized private lesson packages.
  • “The Consent Conversation” – A Tango-Inspired Workshop on Inclusion & Connection: A transformative workshop using Argentine Tango to engage with inclusion, boundaries, and embodied consent, delivered in a fully interactive format.

Milonga: This is a social dance event for tango. People come to listen to the music and dance together. Dancers sit around the room and invite each other using the Cabeceo, which is a silent invitation using clear eye contact and a subtle nod. On the floor, couples move counterclockwise around the room to keep the space moving safely.
We host these authentic Buenos Aires style traditional milongas, outside of a studio environment, in a beautiful ballroom café. We mostly dance in a close embrace in milongas.

Practicas: This is a practice session. It is a relaxed space where you come to train, ask people to dance, pause to test steps, practice your technique, and fix mistakes.
We host weekly guided practice under the guidance of Roopa, so you also get direct corrections on your technique from the teacher.

Joining & Eligibility

Not at all! Most of our students begin with no prior dance experience, so there’s no need to worry.

Our instructor’s innovative teaching methods make learning smooth and enjoyable, and you can confidently start from scratch with our well‑structured, beginner friendly classes.

We also offer classes at different levels, allowing you to join at the stage that best matches your experience and progress naturally.

Yes, you can join alone.

We rotate partners during class so everyone has the opportunity to learn. We have a proven record of maintaining a healthy lead-follow ratio from inception, as we consciously choose quality over quantity to ensure the best experience for our students. Though we strive for this balance, we do not assign or guarantee a partner for solo registrations. Therefore, it is best to register with a partner and take full ownership of your participation.

Our Role Philosophy:
At Bangalore Tango Academy, we teach both roles (lead and follow) regardless of gender. All participants are expected to rotate partners and engage with the full group.

Group classes rely on shared participation. Dancing exclusively with one partner is not viable and disrupts the learning environment.

If this approach does not resonate with you, or if you prefer training solely with your partner, we recommend booking a private session instead.

Special Note to Single Men:
We always have a long waiting list for single men. It is very infrequent that individual spots open up, and they are filled on a first-come, first-served basis by those who have added their names to the waiting list. To join, you must submit your details through the waiting list form on the specific class page for the batches or workshops. If a spot does open, a notification is sent out, and the slot is given to whoever completes the payment and registration first.

P.S. The duration of a regular batch is 3 months. We do not have a monthly payment option for single men, so you will need to sign up for the full 3 months from the start.

Yes, you can register for a paid session in our ongoing batch to experience the depth and clarity of our training firsthand, or join one of our Introductory Tango Workshops before a new batch begins.

Please note: Ongoing batch sessions are available only for Tango, not Bachata.

As a professional Academy, we honour our instructor’s expertise and do not offer free trials. While a Scholarship Program is available for those facing genuine financial hardship, our training is designed for individuals ready to invest in their learning.

If you are unsure, wait. If you’re ready, welcome.

Details about upcoming classes can be found here.

There is no strict age limit.

Anyone with interest and enthusiasm is welcome.

Batches & Logistics

Koramangala: Studio is near Koramangala Club

Indiranagar: Studio is near 100 Feet Road

Jayanagar: Studio is near Jayadeva Hospital Metro Station

The exact class location will be shared with registered participants via WhatsApp one day prior to the session.

We have chosen not to disclose the venue publicly in advance due to repeated incidents of unregistered walk-ins, which have disrupted class dynamics and compromised participant experience. This boundary is essential to protect the safety, privacy, and integrity of our Academy.

If you are assessing commute feasibility, we have provided a nearby landmark to help you gauge distance.

New students can join every first Sunday of the month. Batch tenure is 3 months.

Classes run on a rolling basis. The first hour covers beginner friendly content. The second hour progresses into more challenging improver concepts. During your first month, you attend the first hour to learn basics. You can also stay for the second hour if you want to. After you complete your first month, you will start attending second hour. You can also repeat the first hour if you want to.

Each batch is capped at 12 participants to ensure quality. If you book early, you are more likely to get a spot. If the batch fills up, you will need to wait for the next cycle by adding your name to the waiting list.

In rare cases, yes. This is only possible if the capped number of 12 participants has not been reached.

Joining is allowed through the first two classes. If you miss the initial sessions, we will support you in catching up, provided you commit to consistent attendance from that point onward.

Major Holidays

Batch sessions are scheduled around major holidays such as Diwali, Christmas, and New Year.

Missed Classes Policy

If you miss a class, we cannot extend or compensate with extra sessions. Tracking individual attendance is not feasible. Our model is simple: you pay a monthly fee, as in any Academy, and attend classes.

Curriculum Design

Our curriculum is non-linear, with each class offering standalone value. Missed content cannot be replicated exactly. At Bangalore Tango Academy, learning is not about counting hours, it’s about absorbing content.

Subscription Value

Most students end up attending more than double the hours their fee technically covers. We encourage you to join as many sessions as your subscription allows, across levels, to accelerate progress and deepen understanding.

Added Privileges

These are bonuses, not part of the core subscription:

  • Access to Tango Improvers classes
  • BTA Tango Laboratory (practica)
  • Access to regular beginner Tango workshops

Your 3 month batch subscription unlocks:

12 Core Class Hours + 12 Bonus Class Hours + 12 Bonus Practice Hours = 36 Total Hours

Progression Options

  • Improvers Subscription: After completing the beginner course, you may revisit beginner classes while attending improvers sessions. Ideal for revision and reinforcement.
  • One-on-One Review: If you miss 3 or more classes and feel disconnected for any reason, we recommend booking a one-on-one session to consolidate your learning.

Commitment & Academy Ethos

We go above and beyond for students who show commitment and consistency.

As an Academy, not a transactional service, our policies are designed to uphold that distinction. Missed classes are not grounds for negotiation or compensation.

Note on Bachata

Some of the above options may not apply to Bachata, which currently runs in a single-level format.

Please read the terms and conditions carefully before registering.

No specific dancewear or shoes are required to start these classes.

Simply wear comfortable clothes. Any smooth-soled, narrow shoes, socks, or even jazz shoes will work perfectly.

If you prefer wearing shoes during the session, please ensure they are clean and change into them after arriving at the studio.

Fees & Registration

No. All classes at the Academy have a clearly stated fee at the time of registration.

Our Academy is a recognized brand, and the fees reflect the teacher’s extensive training in Argentina, together with her depth of experience and knowledge. These are not casual hobby sessions. Every class is professional, structured, and valued accordingly.

Yes. We do not accommodate walk-ins or last-minute registrations. Partner dance requires advance planning and balanced batches, which means participant numbers must be confirmed early.

To reserve your spot, complete your registration in advance. You will be notified when a spot is available. Ensure that you provide the correct WhatsApp number and check your messages regularly. We are not responsible for missed notifications or delays in response.

Unnecessarily blocking a spot may result in blacklisting from future registrations.

Recommended Timelines:

  • 2-3 weeks in advance for regular batches
  • 10-12 days before for workshops

We only accept UPI payments.

If you encounter a ₹2,000 transaction limit, this is an NPCI security protocol. To prevent fraud, all UPI apps restrict payments to ₹2,000 when a QR code is scanned from a phone’s gallery.

To pay the full amount without this restriction, please scan the QR code directly from a separate device like a laptop or another phone using your camera. You can also manually enter the UPI ID displayed directly underneath the QR code to initiate the transaction in your app.

In the world of Tango, mastery is not measured by certificates but by the ability to connect with one’s partner and the music.

The essence of authentic tango cannot be encapsulated by a certificate or a piece of paper.
